Welcome to this week’s esports update! This week held the final week of the initial Gfinity Elite Series league play – next week, the top four teams will head into the Play-Offs, and the week after that will be the Finals, held between the top two teams in each game. This week also saw the start of the Overwatch Contenders league! Given the popularity of Overwatch as a game, and the fact we are likely to have our own local representation in the next season of the Overwatch League, I thought it would be a good idea to watch the up-and-comers locally!
Welcome to this week’s esports update! Last week, I said that Gfinity Elite Series only had one more week before the playoffs, but it turns out I was a week early – next week is the final week of League Play, with the Play-offs starting July 7. With Overwatch League on hiatus this week, I decided to take a look at another popular game with a Global Tournament – PUBG! While I was hesitant at first, it turns out the tournament format is really viewer-friendly, so I’ve covered the results of the Oceanic tournament for PUBG Global Invitational. Note I don’t have the bandwidth to cover all tournaments, but I do play to cover the big finale, of which our winning team will be a part later in the year.
Welcome to this week’s esports update! This week marked the end of Stage 4 for the current Season of the Overwatch League, with the Los Angeles Valiant coming out on top as the Stage 4 Champions. The teams will have a three-week break before the Playoffs begin in mid-July. That said, it was business as usual for Gfinity’s Elite Series, which has begun to hit its stride now three weeks in. There’s only one more week left before the playoffs begin for that tournament as well! Looks like I need to dig up some details on some other tournaments – suggestions welcome!
Welcome to this week’s esports update! It’s a little late, due to the E3 shenanigans, but hopefully not too late! There’s a lot more to come, and I’ve kind of streamlined my ability to do these posts, so it’s definitely getting easier! I’ve also got my eyes on a few other tournaments, but I’ve noticed there are so many different events on that it’s impossible to cover it all. Over time, I’ll revise my focus, but for now, it’s Aussie tourneys and OWL (because let’s face it, that’s hugely popular)! Again, if there’s something specific you’d like me to cover, let me know and I’ll start keeping tabs and add it to the update.
Ubisoft put on a good show this morning – probably a little long, but full of good content, which is what’s most important for this kind of thing. A couple of little surprises, but strangely no big announcements (nothing beyond what was expected to be on show, at least). Videos embedded below!
I’m going to do my best to cover the esports tournaments that I’m aware of. At present, I’m only across the Gfinity Elite Series and the Overwatch League, but if there’s something you’d like me to add, let me know. Also, if you’d like me to add or change anything at all to make things clearer, feel free to hit me up in the comments – this is a learning process!
Esports in Australia is growing quickly, and regardless of your personal interest, it’s going to be very big in a few years. My advice would be to jump on board while you can. In the spirit of that comment, I’m looking to increase my esports coverage – starting now!
Gfinity’s Elite Series event is starting very soon – this weekend, in fact. It will play out over three very different games, across consecutive weekends in June and most of July, and fans can attend live, or spectate over Twitch. If you have any interest at all in esports, I’d recommend you take a look – I’ve addressed all the questions that you might have in the article that follows.
